There are Plenty of Fish at MyCeviche Midtown

The newest outpost of Chef Sam Gorenstein and Roger Duarte’s fast casual seafood spot, MyCeviche in The Shops in Midtown, is also it’s largest with the most extensive menu of ceviche bowls, salads, tacos, burritos, Poke and fresh sides.

Strictly by accident, I happened to stop in on the very first day the doors were open during their Art Basel Pop Up and got to see Sam in action behind the counter teaching and watching his eager staff assemble the poke bowls, salads, burritos and ceviches.

A clean bright spot, with the signature hi top communal tables, creative murals and plenty of add in salsitas and fresh cut lime wedges, MyCeviche Midtown offers healthy options for the lunchtime shopping crowd and the midtown residents looking for alternatives to wings and burgers.

A Taste of Liguria: Riviera Focacceria

Midtown is a funny place.  Anchored by Target and WalMart, it seems to be unclear as to whether or not it wants to be a mall or a walk able neighborhood for the many condo and rental residents who live there.

As far as food goes, it is equally confusing with top hip restaurants,  Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill , Salumeria 104 , Bocce and BlackBrick on one side, and Five Guys, Hurricane Wings and 100 Mondaditos and many loud Sports bars cropping up almost daily one block over.

Parking is great, $2- for 2 hours in the garages and Midtown is pretty accessible to I-95/195 and both downtown and the beach.

So it was with some trepidation that I strolled into Riviera Foccaceria one evening at the glowing recommendation of GourmandJ, Wokstar and Sara Liss among others.  Sandwiched between a busy sports bar and Giraffas, it seemed an unlikely spot for good food.

It was early, but Riviera was already well staffed and the open kitchen was buzzing for the handful of diners seeking fresh and authentic Ligurian cuisine.

Ligurian cuisine?

I love Italian food... Northern Italy with its cream based meat dishes, Southern Italy with its red sauce heavy items, but Liguria?  Never knew it had it’s own cuisine, much less even where Liguria was.

Liguria is a narrow, mountainous coastal strip of northwestern Italy that includes the famed Italian Riviera resort towns of San Remo and Portofino as well as the iconic Cinque Terre, a collection of five small villages situated in one of the most beautiful stretches of the Mediterranean coastline. Liguria's main city is Genoa, the hometown of Christopher Columbus and a melting pot of Southern French and Northern Italian culture, history, and architecture…and cuisine.

Estrella Damm in Miami: A Dinner at Cena by Michy

Estrella Damm, the oldest brewery in Spain founded in 1875, transports “Spain to Miami” this summer by coordinating three-course meals that feature octopus-driven menus paired with their Barcelona-brewed pilsner at twenty-five participating local restaurants.

“We selected pulpo because it is representative of Mediterranean cuisine and because we think it is an intriguing ingredient Miami foodies will love and who better to prepare these dishes than Miami’s most inventive chefs,” said Floris van Neerrijnen, Estrella Damm Brand Manager.

The menus are available Saturday, June 20, through Sunday, July 5, and range in price from $30-$52.

MIAbites had an opportunity to visit Michelle Bernstein’s new restaurant Cena by Michy for a sneak peak of its Estrella Damm menu.

For $39 per person, we were treated to an appetizer of stracciatella salad with stracciatella custard, heirloom tomatoes, basil, and fried green tomatoes; a dish that alone was worth a special visit, an entrée of fettuccini, braised beef cheeks, and red wine stewed octopus, and a delicious dessert of a crispy apple pie with stewed apples, cider caramel sauce, and vanilla, and of course, a glass of Estrella Damm.

Imagine.

The bustling of a hectic Italian city.

Young lovers speaking to each other in a most romantic language.

The ubiquitous smell of espresso filling the streets.

Sitting at a cafe, overlooking the Arno, taking in the sights and sounds of it all.

You take a sip of your beverage, the city’s infamous cocktail.  The bitterness stimulates your senses, the herbaceousness makes you feel alive.  This is how Count Camillo Negroni felt in 1919, the first time he tried his namesake cocktail, conceived in the beautiful city of Florence.

Midtown Oyster Bar: A Nod to New England in Miami

Much has been written of late about oysters and the chilly climes of the North that yield fresh seafood ingredients from New England. The Wednesday Food section of the New York Times even recently featured a cover story , “Giving the North Its Due”.

Miami has not had their head in the sand, responding with Danny Serfer’s Mignonette and the anticipated opening of Izzy’s Fish & Oyster by Tongue & Cheek’s, Jamie DeRosa.

Midtown Oyster Bar, the newish concept from the Graspa Group, provides Midtown Miami diners with a refreshing take on seafood specialties with a Mediterranean tendency. The chef, Angelo Masarin, is in fact, from Italy and also helms the kitchen at the nearby Salumeria 104 (which, by the way, is one of my favorite restaurants in Miami). His Italian influence is seen in many of the menu items, yet Midtown Oyster Bar still manages to maintain a New England quality to it.

The interior is bathed in shades of cream and white with cool blues creating a bright, summer atmosphere. Wooden lobster traps dangle above the tables with warm lights tucked inside generating an inviting glow.   While the dining room is small there is a cozy bar area where patrons can watch oysters being freshly shucked and sip on a glass of chilled Sancerre or Vermentino.  Several tables are also available outside.

Blackbrick: Chinese in Midtown Miami

With all the excitement surrounding SOBEWFF, Chinese New Year on February 19th was basically overlooked in Miami.  But not so at Blackbrick aka @Midtown Chinese, who celebrated the Year of The Sheep by being invited to cook at the James Beard House in NYC.  Owner Richard Hales, Chef Ivan, and the team hopped a plane to present the multi course New Years dinner which even featured homemade local Azucar ice cream and Panther Coffee

Back in Miami, you can celebrate New Years yourself by heading over to Midtown to Blackbrick

Before even entering Blackbrick Chinese you can detect the unmistakable fragrance of Chinese food wafting down the street.  Once inside, the comforting flavors hit you like a brick (pun intended) and instantly you know you’re in for a gustatory treat. Located in the chic Midtown Miami area, Blackbrick serves refreshingly good Chinese food that lures customers from all parts of Miami. Nominated in 2014 by Bon Appetit Magazine as one of the Best 50 New Restaurants ( and the only nom for Miami ) Chef/owner Richard Hales, of Sakaya Kitchen fame, has had an “overall goal, for decades, to bring Asian food to Florida". And with dishes like Yueng Chow duck fried rice and Gung Bao rabbit, Miami can finally indulge in elevated, modern Chinese fare.  I had the opportunity to sit down with Hales and his chef, Ivan, to discuss how Blackbrick came to be and what he hopes to achieve with this new restaurant.

SoBeWFF Goes Local…finally!

Unlike previous years, the festival truly makes an effort to showcase local Miami and South Florida chefs. Since its inception the festival has always wooed ticket buyers with celebrity chefs and talent brought from outside Miami, yet passed over many of the talented South Florida chefs that locals know and respect. The emphasis on “local love” is evident for the 2015 edition with many chefs pairing up for intimate dinners, local blogger curated events, and even the introduction of an inaugural group of chef Culinary Captains representing  cohorts of chefs from various neighborhoods throughout South Florida at the Grand Tasting Village.

Chefs at the forefront of this event include:

MIAbites...MIASpice! Our Contributors Picks

Miami Spice,  the 2 month long celebration of Miami’s diverse dining scene organized by the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau kicked off this week with the #EPIC Iron Fork Tasting Event and Chef Competition on Thursday July 31st at the downtown Hyatt Regency and officially runs from August 1st until September 30th, with over 160 restaurants participating.

That means we have only 61 days and nights to dine around town on special menus!

That means potentially 122 meals out!  All at prices of Lunch for $23 and Dinner for $39.

Miami Spice, now in its 13th year, has evolved over the many years as the Miami dining scene has grown and progressed from strictly expense account and hotel dining to creative and niche dining experiences with an International flair on the beach, downtown and in emerging areas like the Design District, Wynwood and MiMo .

In polling the MIAbites team for this article, I came away with mixed impressions of Miami Spice and a “How To” plan to navigate this annual opportunity to dine around town.  In point:

“Before hitting up any restaurant for Miami Spice, I go straight to the website and read through the posted menus.   I begin with a few basic questions:

1. Is this really a deal? Could I eat at the same restaurant anytime of year ordering whatever I wanted from the regular menu for the same price or maybe less?

2. Is the Miami Spice menu interesting?  Does it include unique dishes that are not on the regular menu?  Is it the cop-out cheapo salmon, chicken and short rib offering?

3. Is the menu offered on weekends; or is the restaurant only serving weekday lunches so they can say they are on the list?

4. Is a new restaurant I've been meaning to try participating?

After answering those questions, I end up with a handful of prospects appearing to offer good values and thoughtful menus.  At this point, I put them on my calendar and make my dinner reservations.  This way, I don't let those two months mysteriously pass by because my best intentions were...well, you know.  Only intentions.”

“Concentrate on favorite restaurants. There are also restaurants who add supplemental prices for the dishes you really want, which may be worth paying extra for if you really want something not on the Miami Spice menu.  Check ahead but many also offer some great wine specials during Miami Spice.”

“Miami Spice has been a double edge sword for me in most cases because I honestly believe it is too hard for some restaurants to get within the pricing norm without having to cut corners so every year I've used Spice to check off restaurants from my To Do list, specially the more expensive ones, and many times end up having a mediocre meal because the pricing is so challenging.

In summary I'm a fan but I'm not a fan, does that make sense?”

So, MIAbites readers, here goes the list we have compiled:

Sugarcane Raw Bar and Grill and Bocce Bar: “Chef Talks” with Chef Timon Balloo

“ I remember when” seems to be a refrain many a Miamian shares when asked about changes to Miami.  Be it the building boom in the early 2000’s when the “crane “, (and I don’t mean the bird), was considered the state bird, to the emerging of hipster neighborhoods like Wynwood and Sunset Harbor, where abandoned warehouses and auto body shops stood, to the explosion of unique and exciting food concepts and culinary niches.

Chef Timon Balloo is no exception, having burst upon the culinary scene in the mid-2000's with the opening of Sugarcane Raw Bar and Grill, a three-kitchen concept catering to the popular and very social Miami trend of sharing tastes and dishes.

BlackBrick- Unique Chinese in MidTown

Melissa Ginsberg is an Italian teacher with a passion for food of all cuisines. Besides her passion for cooking and food she enjoys singing, traveling any chance she can get,  and the Miami nightlife!

Chef/owner Richard Hales, of Sakaya Kitchen fame, has had an “overall goal, for decades, to bring Asian food to Florida” and with dishes like Yueng Chow duck fried rice and Gung Bao rabbit, Miami can finally indulge in elevated, modern Chinese fare.  I had the opportunity to sit down with Hales and his chef, Ivan, to discuss how Blackbrick came to be and what he hopes to achieve with this new restaurant.

“Growing up I was exposed to the same flavors in Chinese food (soy sauce and various vinegars) since I was a baby so I think it was normal for me and it’s always been something that’s been in my plate.” As a child, Hales was introduced to Filipino food through his Filipino grandmother and recounts that his time spent living in Thailand and Hong Kong and traveling extensively around Asia helped to shape his menu into what it is now. His time spent working at Jean-Georges’  Vong in New York City revealed to him new ingredients and pungent flavors that put the wheels in motion for Richard’s long time love affair with Asian food.
